Who We Are
Food metrology is an emerging area of scientific, industrial and social interest, addressing the challenge of traceable measurements of food constituents and contaminants in food matrices, developing standardized procedures and suitable reference materials to ensure full traceability of measurements to SI units.
Available methods and tools include: high quality reference standards, validated methods, robust sampling practices, proven calibration approaches, natural matrix reference materials, speciation chemistry, measurement uncertainty assessment, linkage traceability and competence tests.
The main impacts are on the development of new measurement traceability paths to allow rapid sampling methods in screening processes and on the development of certified reference materials that allow measurements of food components, to ensure quality, safety and provenance of food.
In response to these needs, a project proposal was drawn up in 2017 focused on the goal of creating a new research infrastructure for food safety and sustainability.
The project was selected through comparative evaluation in the context of the “INFRA-P Support for projects for the creation, strengthening and expansion of public IR”
Investments for growth and employment l’occupazione
The Metrological Infrastructure For Food Safety was created with the contribution of the Regional Operational Program “Investments for growth and employment” F.E.S.R. 2014/2020 – ACTION I.1a.5.1 “Support for research infrastructures considered critical / crucial for regional systems” and the involved Institutes in March 2018 formed a Temporary Association of Purpose for the duration of 5 years.
The joint effort of the research, technical and administrative staff of the Institutes involved has allowed the implementation of IMPreSA within the timescales set by the Piedmont Region and the infrastructure has been operational since February 2021.
